If you want to find out how to store paneer to keep it fresh for longer, you’ve come to the right place. Follow this simple, 2-step process to keep paneer super soft and moist for days!

We eat paneer often at home, and I often have a chunk or two remaining after adding it to our favourite matar paneer, which we honestly make at least once a week.

A lot of people just dump it in a box and store it in the fridge, but that’s the fastest way to dry, rubbery paneer.

This is why I am going to share with you a really simple tip on how to store paneer in a way that it remains fresh and soft for up to a week. This method works for both homemade and store-bought paneer, and takes only 2 minutes each time. Excited? Let’s go!

How To Store Paneer

Step 01: Take an airtight container and place the block of paneer in it.

Step 02: Fill this container with water until the paneer is fully submerged.

Step 03: Cover with a lid and transfer the container to the fridge.

Step 04: Change the water every 2 days

And ta-da!! This simple method keeps your paneer fresh and moist for up to a week. The soaking water prevents the paneer from getting dry and keeps it as soft as the day you made it.

Richa’s Top Tips

  • I recommend using a glass container instead of plastic to prevent odours.
  • To store it for longer, simply place it in a ziplock bag, remove any excess air and seal it well, and freeze it. This way paneer can be stored for up to a month. When you want to cook it, thaw it and rehydrate it in some hot water for gorgeous fresh paneer!

Frequently Asked Questions

How to defrost frozen paneer?

Defrost paneer by simply taking the container out of the freezer and place it in the fridge the previous night. This will allow it to defrost completely. You can also remove the container and allow it to defrost on the countertop. This should take about 2-4 hours but it’s a completely hands off process.

Can I use this method to store homemade paneer?

Absolutely! I often make a big batch of my homemade paneer at the start of every week, and this paneer storage method always comes in handy. I cut the paneer into individual meal-sized portions and store them in several smaller containers which I then use as and when needed.

Once you try this method and realise how simple it is to keep paneer as fresh and soft as the day you made/bought it, there’s really no going back. Try this method and let me know what you thought of it in the comments below or over on my IG @my_foodstory.
